CHANGING MY SPOTS

Composer:
Robert Carl
Instrumentation freestyle:
any number of players, instruments, flexible duration

Changing My Spots is a group improvisation whose form is open
but whose harmonic materials are fixed. Its object is to move from one
harmonic field to another, fluidly, and without a realization that a
modulation has occurred, until after the fact. Since it is based on a structure
derived from overtone relations, its sound is strongly “tonal”, but it has little
to do with traditional functional progressions.

DARWIN'S DREAM

Composer:
Elliott Schwartz
Instrumentation freestyle:
any melodic instrument, piano, tape playback

Flexible instrumentation-- a duo of melody instrument and piano, plus CD recording (electronic collage of many sound sources). Visual image projection and narration by a third performer are optional.  All performers speak isolated lines of text written by Charles Darwin.  Performers work with a 30-minute CD recording, and choose a portion of that recording (anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes). They then perform (some improvised) material, using an instruction sheet, against the recorded sounds.  An homage to Charles Darwin -- his life and work - in celebration of his 200th birthday year.

Symphony of Drones No. 1

Composer:
Matthew Welch
Instrumentation freestyle:
variable instruments, or: flute, saxophone, violin, piano/accordion, percussion, and vocalist

Symphony of Drones #1 (2001) is a symphony in the most literal meaning of the word, a collection of sounds, in this case, those centered around a drone mentality. It is a conducted, graphically notated piece designed for any collection of four or more pitched instruments. It is in a three -movement form, and each movement addresses various indeterminate and structured improvisational concepts that explore textures that ornament, enhance and disrupt a fused and continuous ensemble timbre.
