SHADOW GROUND

Composer:
Harold Oliver
Instrumentation freestyle:
Bar Sax, Guitar, Frame Drum (or Tom Tom), Piano
The four musicians should be as widely space on the stage as possible: the Piano, as is normal, should be placed the the far back and the Guitar at the front, facing forward., the Saxophone on the far right, facing the pianist, and the Percussion to the far left, facing the guitar. Though exact rhythmic coordination may be difficult with this placement, note that the individual player's parts are soloistically, rhythmically independant. This placement should result in a more balanced effect.

WHERE SOUND AND THOUGHT MEET

Composer:
Robert Carl
Instrumentation freestyle:
Soprano Saxophone in Bb; Alto Saxophone in Eb ;Tenor Saxophone in Bb; Baritone Saxophone in Eb

Where Sound and Thought Meet is a compact work which uses contemporary materials in a rigorous traditional form. The materials are all derived from overtone relations built from a low Db, the concert pitch underpinning all four saxophones (underscored by the puns built into the titles of the two movements). The form is prelude and fugue. The interplay between these elements gives the work is dynamism. The internal chemistry of pure sound meets the abstract architecture of the form. And of course, that’s a lot of what music is about, isn’t it?
