Description

Composer's Note:

Among the works I have composed for solo string instruments are those with suggestive titles, evoking imagery that is sometimes visual or narrative. Edge of Amber, written in 2012, is one of these. It is music for solo viola, an instrument that I associate with warmth of sound, complexity of color, and an intimate expressivity. Deep and rich, the viola seems like amber, rather than, say, diamonds.

Edge of Amber was commissioned to be used as the required work for performance in the 40th International Viola Congress young performer competition, and it was performed 12 times in the semi-final round and 4 times during the finalist round during the competition.
