Detail
Riposte (63 bars for John Cage), for flute alone, was written nearly fifteen years after Rose began writing in earnest for the flute with several works for Pierre-Yves Artaud - the 1980 Ziggurat for flute duet, the 1983 Rhapsodies pour flûte et cordes, and others. Riposte, though it shares stylistic similarities with other contemporary works of the period (from Sollberger, Lacour, Fotis, and more) differs greatly in sound. Riposte’s thematic treatment of ideas, longer cohesive lines, and clear development across the entirety of the work belie the rapidly-shifting musical microcosms so often seen in other similar pieces, and allow the flutist to fully connect and phrase these musical ideas.
