New 2021 edition from 1973 original.

The 12 Studies for Solo Oboe was written for one of the composer's students, the composer and oboist Leroy Southers (1941-2003), who introduced the work on December 9, 1971, in Los Angeles. As a whole, the work is a tightly composed, succinct statement in idiomatic musical styles with movements given over to the consistent development of lucidly defined contrasting moods. The variety of the studies’ meters allow the player to show the juxtapositions of each work’s character. — Dr. Lisa Kozenko, Ball State University, Associate Professor
