Comments

Composer's  note:  ROUNDS continues my interest in American folk music traditions. Written for one piano four-hands - and later orchestrated for small chamber orchestra -
ROUNDS consists of short folk dances evoking the spirit of "round dancing" and occasionally employing the imitative musical form of the round. Numbers 1 & 2 are derivative examples of musical rounds: in #1 there is even a round for the partnering right/left and left/ right hands occurring simultaneously. Numbers 3-5 are Round Dances. Round dancing - also known as circle dancing or ring dancing and in contra-distinction to square dancing and line dancing - is any kind of ritual dance or dance entertainment in which the participants move in circular fashion often with the hands joined. Round Dances can take the form of lively celebrations as for example #1, #3 & #5 ; or Round Dances can be slow, stately and dignified as is the music for movements #2 & #4.
