Description

Composer's Note:

COINCIDENT #7 is for a quartet defined not by specific instrumentation but by the ability of performers to fulfill certain roles and realize specified sonic outcomes. At least one performer must be capable of playing back the fixed-media parts, provided as audio WAV files. All instruments may be electronic or a mix of acoustic and electronic. Electronic instruments may be of any design, generating sound via synthesis, sample playback, and/or processing of acoustic input.

This is the final work in the COINCIDENT project commissioned by Minnesota new music ensemble Zeitgeist as part of their DECADE FIVE commissioning series. The electronic sound in COINCIDENT #7 is the product of recordings each member of Zeitgeist made during Covid lockdown, processed by the composer in his home studio using his Kyma system. The graphic notation in the score is a new approach taken by the composer during the pandemic. Miller is now creating works that can be performed in a variety of modalities--live, in front of an audience, telematically (online), or in a hybrid approach--and COINCIDENT #7 continues to refine his exploration of the possibilities.
