Description

Composer's Note:

Rondo Fantasy for viola and piano was composed at Walla Walla, Washington in 1967 and premiered in 1977 by Ernst and Lori Wallfisch. The form of the work, divided into six sections, is rondo-like because of the patterned repetition of individual sections. Their return is highly varied however, and this, together with the music's general character, gives the impression of an extemporization. Though technically challenging to perform, the nature of the piece is best described as lyrical/dramatic rather than virtuosic. Formatively, classical serial procedures are followed, and typical dodecaphonic gestures are employed, such as the dramatic rising seventh followed by expressive descending third heard at the outset. A compositional objective was to use familiar material as a springboard for further musical discussion and personal expression.
