Description

SYNTHECISMS No. 2 (for Piano and Pre-recorded Tape) was premiered by British pianist Philip Mead at the 1991 International Computer Music Conference, Glasgow, Scotland.

Composer's note:

  The Tape part was realized from material generated at the Koninklijk Conservatorium (Institute for Sonology), The Hague, Netherlands, Brooklyn College Center for Computer Music and at the Heidelberg College Electronic Music Studio.  The instrumental part was composed during a residency at the Yaddo Foundation, Saratoga Springs, New York.  Composition of the work was supported through a grant from the Aigler Fund at Heidelberg University. SYNTHECISMS NO. 2 was performed at the London City Festival, under sponsorship of City University, London, March 1991 and in January, 1992 it was performed as part of a Festival of American Music at the Institute for Contemporary Art, London.   In November 1991, SYNTHECISMS NO. 2  was selected as the required competition piece in the final round of the national  British Contemporary Piano Competition which was held at  Cambridge University, Cambridge, England. Financial support for the performance and competition was provided by Sonic Arts Network, London,  Cambridge University and the Hinrichsen Foundation.  A number of additional performances of SYNTHECISMS NO. 2 have been given including the University of Utah, MOAB Center, the University of Texas, Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Heidelberg University.   Synthecisms was recorded for release on the Opus One label in September of 1994 at the Royal College of Music in London by pianist Philip Mead. The piece was also recorded by the composer for the Equilibrium label at the University of Michigan in June, 1999.
