Aschaffenburg Grand Prize in Composition, and then at the University of California at San Diego.  He has held professorships at Oberlin Conservatory and Arkansas State University.  Since 2016 he is Associate Professor of Music at Hillsdale College, teaching theory, musicianship, composition, and harpsichord.
