Probably this composer's most often performed work, Frederick Tillis's Spiritual Fantasy No. 12 (Suite for String Quartet) embodies the essence of the composer's series of works using thematic and harmonic materials of the spiritual. Each movement uses a spiritual song in musical expressions of pathos and triumph over worldly obstacles. The second movement, Wade in the Water, has been selected by many quartets as a concert staple, and continues as one of the most popular works in the ACA music catalog.
